I spent the night at my children’s home recently, babysitting for my 8 year-old grandson and 5 year-old granddaughter. My daughter-in-law, Emilie, knew that by the end of the day, I would probably be looking forward to a glass of wine or a martini, so she had some vodka and wine all set out for me. She knows how much I like dirty martinis with more than one olive, so she showed me a few jars in her fridge containing a variety of stuffed olives.
When we were dating, my husband used to get a kick out of my ordering a dirty martini with four olives. When the icy glass was presented, he would look at all the green olives and say, “I see you’re having a salad with your martini.” I learned how to make them at home for Friday date nights on the patio. The problem I had was running out of olive juice long before I went through the olives. You can imagine my delight when Emilie showed me a bottle of Dirty Sue olive juice she had purchased at BevMo, a gourmet wine and liquor store popular here in the West where we live. She said BevMo also had their own brand. It’s just a bottle filled with olive brine to add to the ice and vodka in the shaker. I resolved to buy some to have at home.
As serendipity would have it, two days later I learned a new BevMo was opening in Rancho Santa Margarita, just three miles from my home. It’s way closer than the next-closest store across town. I mentioned this to my husband with the news that BevMo also sells his favorite cigars so he won’t have to drive 20 minutes to the tobacco place he frequents.
We drove by the location because it’s across the parking lot from one of our favorite restaurants, Mi Casa. We saw a big sign out front that said BevMo would be opening soon. Yippee – fabulous wine selection, great gift items, cigars, cheeses to go with wine, the finest tequilas, my all-time favorite Stewart’s Orange Cream Soda and Dirty Martini Olive Juice.
The new BevMo store’s grand opening is tomorrow. And they have added something else I absolutely love more than anything in this world: my husband is a new member of the BevMo team. He’s their cigar guy (pictured here on the far right). I think he has found the job of his dreams, which has been his goal since retiring a year ago.
At the end of this full circle, I must admit that something magical and awesome has finally come out of my taste for a dirty martini!
